The Dividend Dough Riser Tool

Bake your dividend dough to perfection!

Who knew your retirement could smell as good as freshly baked sourdough? What if you set up a retirement account focused on dividend stocks and funds and reinvested the dividends for a few years? Could you live on just the dividends?

Let’s find out.

Enter the Dividend Dough Riser: just feed in your starting balance, initial dividend yield, dividend‑CAGR and expected portfolio growth, then hit Calculate. In seconds you’ll see two lines over 30 years—one for your annual dividend payouts and one for your total account value—each point revealing the exact dollar amount when you hover. No kneading budgets or yeast required: just plug in your numbers, and watch your ‘dough’ rise as you reinvest your dividends.

Or, uncheck the reinvest dividends box to see the annual dividends you could draw. This simulates a retirement scenario when those dividends become part of your new monthly “paycheck”. Notice how much slower they grow when they aren’t reinvested.

Initial Investment Balance ($)
• What it is: The total market value of your dividend‑paying portfolio.
• Where to get it: Check your latest brokerage statement or portfolio dashboard.
• How to enter: Type in the dollar amount (commas allowed) in the “Initial Investment Balance” field.

Initial Dividend Yield (%)
• What it is: Your portfolio’s current weighted‑average dividend yield.
• Where to get it: Many brokerages or fund fact sheets show “yield” for each holding—multiply each holding’s yield by its weight, then sum.
• How to enter: Enter that percentage (no extra “%”) in the “Initial Dividend Yield” box.

Dividend CAGR (%)
• What it is: The weighted‑average compound annual growth rate of your dividends over the past 5 years.
• Where to get it: Check each fund’s or stock’s 5‑year dividend CAGR on Morningstar, Seeking Alpha, or your own history; weight by portfolio allocation.
• How to enter: Enter that single % in the “Dividend CAGR” field.

Annual Portfolio Growth Rate (%)
• What it is: Your expected annual capital appreciation rate (price return) for the portfolio.
• Where to get it: Use a conservative estimate based on historical total return minus yield (e.g., if a fund’s 10 year total return is 10 % and yield 3 %, price return was ~7 %).
• How to enter: Enter that percentage in the “Annual Portfolio Growth Rate” box.

Calculate
• Once all four inputs are set, click the green Calculate button.
• The chart below will redraw showing:

Orange line = annual dividends each year (left axis)

Green line = end‑of‑year portfolio value (right axis)

Read the results
• Hover your mouse over any point on either line to see a tooltip with the dollar‑rounded value (dividends or balance) at that year.
• Use the horizontal X‑axis (Year 1–30) to compare how both dividends and portfolio value grow over time.

That’s it—enter, calculate, then mouse‑over the graph to explore your rising dividends and balance!
